Pharmacy Cost of Dispensing Surveys

Myers and Stauffer has extensive national experience performing pharmacy cost of dispensing surveys for Medicaid programs over a period of more than 30 years. We have performed over 50 cost of dispensing surveys in dozens of states. Our Medicaid pharmacy expertise includes:

  • Designing pharmacy cost of dispensing surveys.
  • Conducting desk and field reviews of survey information submitted by pharmacies.
  • Identifying allowable and non-allowable costs, performing cost allocations and preparing statistical analyses.
  • Developing reimbursement options, payment models and recommendations.

We have reviewed and processed more than 20,000 pharmacy cost of dispensing surveys and performed field visits at more than 600 pharmacies across the country. Accordingly, Myers and Stauffer has an extensive understanding of financial data from pharmacies and has developed approaches to reviewing that data to verify completeness and accuracy of submitted cost of dispensing surveys.

Recently, some state Medicaid programs and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have focused on pharmacy ingredient reimbursement based on actual acquisition cost (AAC) as an alternative to other published pricing benchmarks. Potential cost savings and increased transparency are some of the advantages realized by state Medicaid programs from AAC-based reimbursement. Implementation of an AAC program for pharmacy reimbursement will require that states evaluate their dispensing fee and the performance of a cost of dispensing survey is an integral component of that evaluation. Myers and Stauffer looks forward to working with your state to assist with your pharmacy reimbursement consulting needs.

Our extensive Medicaid pharmacy experience includes setting AAC/MAC rates for nine states and conducting more than 50 pharmacy dispensing cost surveys in 20 states.
